Bargain hair care products–do you have a favorite?

by Robin on October 25, 2009

suave-condI saw this story as I was surfing the headlines earlier, and it piqued my interest.  TotalBeauty.com polled its readers on the worst haircare products, and the story I just linked lists them all with negative testimonials.

Now, I’m all for friendly warnings for which (crappy) products to stay away from, but don’t think the 10 Worst list means there aren’t some really great bargain haircare products out there.

Good Housekeeping, which for all its perceived stodginess is still one of the best consumer rating and approval sources out there, has a writeup on some of the best bargain haircare products, which you can read here.  You’ll find a similar list of best bargain haircare products asuave-shampoot the Hairstyle Blog, too.

You may notice that Pantene’s Pro-V products pop up on all of the good lists, and for good reason.  While it’s not my current choice for shampoo and conditioner, I’ve used it often in the past and probably will again.  The conditioner is one of the best I’ve used, and it smells great, too.

My current faves are both from Suave–partly because that’s what my budget allows right now, and partly because they’re just really great products.  I use the Suave Naturals shampoo in the tropical coconut scent–it smells wonderful, and is a good moisturizing shampoo.  For conditioner, I use their slightly more expensive Suave Professionals Damage Care condition–my hair takes a LOT of styling abuse–and it’s formulated to be similar to Redken’s moisturizing conditioner.  Having used Redken in the past, I think Suave’s done a darn good job of imitating Redken’s oustanding moisturizing/damage repair conditioner, and at about one-tenth the price.

While you have to be cautious shopping drugstore brands for haircare products, there are some very good ones out there, and the prices are much better (obviously) than salon prices.  And even better–the products are almost always on sale somewhere, and they almost all publish coupons in the Sunday newspaper, so your good deal gets even better when you combine those deals.

Find out which drugstore brands are highly rated–and suited for your hairstyle and/or styling situation–and give them a try.  You’ll save an enormous amount of money every year over salon brands.

For anybody in the NJ area, the Harmon brand stuff is pretty good. Harmon’s a discount beauty store, and even name brand stuff is MUCH cheaper there than anywhere else.

We always joke that it’s a mafia-front company because their prices are so good.

My favorite budget hair products are Neutrogena products. Neutrogena’s Triple Moisture Line works wonders! By the way, I noticed that I am on your blogroll and I just added you to mine =).

Thank you kindly, Ms. Fabuless, for the reciprocal link love!! I, too, like Neutrogena’s haircare products, especially their daily clarifying shampoo. GREAT if you use a lot of product on your hair, and very gentle.
